I’ve often heard the question, “I’m not sure if I should do a yoga teacher training. What do you think?” My answer: If there is one thing I have never regretted doing in my life, it’s a yoga teacher training.
What else I would recommend that you do at least once in your life? Things that you would never consider to be a waste of time or money. Things that improve the quality of your life and that have an impact beyond the experience itself. Things that change your perspective and positively impact your life.
Here’s my top 5:
1) Climbing a mountain
It doesn’t matter if you climb Mount Kailash, Annapurna, Everest, Macchu Picchu or Adams Peak. It doesn’t matter how many days you are actually climbing, or how high is the mountain. It’s just important that you climb.
Climbing the mountain, finding silence during the walk and rewarding yourself with a great view after your hard work: not only does this give you a moment that stays in your mind, but it’s a moment, where you experience the present – without thoughts – just enjoying it.
(Climbing a mountain is also one of the best things to do for your 7th Chakra!)
2) Travelling the world
Travel as much as possible, as far as possible, as often as possible. Meeting other cultures and people can open your eyes and help you understand that your definition of ‘normal’ is not the only truth, and that there are many different ways to life a happy life. Step out of your comfort zone and tourist resorts, which seem to give you security but limit new experiences. Travelling is the ultimate way to open your mind and heart.
3.) Joining a yoga teacher training
Of course, this is relevant for those of you who are interested in yoga! But you don’t need to be super flexible or a yogi to do it. In addition to moving your butt for 4 weeks, you learn a lot about yourself and yoga philosophy – and, even more importantly, you are surrounded by inspiring people and like-minded folk, who become lifelong friends. It’s a great break from regular life, an opportunity for transition, and, for many people, a new start into a more conscious life.
4.) Walking the Camino
Whether you choose the Camino de Santiago, or another one, it doesn’t matter which path you follow or for how long. But do it. Take your time, maybe invite a person you want to get to know better, or go on your own. The more time you give yourself, the better. You will come back to what really matters: time, nature, amazing sunrises, moving with the body and knowing your limits, sharing the path with beautiful souls – and more. As you walk, thoughts disappear and gratitude grows.
5.) Silent retreat
Once in your life, you could try to be silent. You can do this on your own at home (which can be bit difficult!) or you can search for a nearby location (many monasteries host short-term visitors). You can combine your silent time with activities you enjoy, such as walking, reading, or sun bathing. The fewer external activities, the better, so that you can look within. Maybe take 10 days of your life and visit a Vipassana center (by Goenka). Not only will you will be silent for 10 days, you will also meditate. True silence is an experience most people never have and its one of the most efficient ways to look at and listen to yourself. To understand, to change, to grow.
Happiness is an inside job,
